My name is Dammaru Niraula. I am from Kathmandu, Nepal and have been working as freelance trekking guide in the Himalayas of Nepal for the past several years. I am a registered trekking guide with authorized government office of Nepal and have license to guide the foreigners in the mountain region of Nepal. I am associated with tourism industry from1988 and initially started to work as porter in this sector. After working as porter for more than 2 years I got an opportunity to work as assistant cook in the same field. Then after some years of my experiences in this sector, I stared working as assistant guide. Later I got two month’s Trekking Guide training from the authorized body of His Majesty’s Government of Nepal (now Nepal Government), which eventually helped me to become a permanent trekking guide. Till then I got fluency in speaking English language as well. Also I learned Japanese language for one and half year from a local campus in Kathmandu and got acquainted with Japanese language too. I learned on the subject of one and half year’s Japanese language. Hence now I am capable of speaking both English as well as Japanese language. I have been guiding the foreigners professionally as registered Trekking Guide since 1990 and I have spent the past 18 years as a specialized trekking guide in the mountains of Nepal.
With regard to my professional working relationship with trekking agencies, I was associated with Himalayan Holidays Trekking Pvt. Ltd, Kathmandu as a full time employee and served in the field of operation for about 10 years. During my tenure with Himalayan Holidays I got immense opportunity to develop my professional competencies in the field of Operations and learned how to provide high-quality services to the clients and how to satisfy them making their trip a very memorable one. I must admit I am intelligent to know that if the clients are happy with our services, beyond all doubt they can disseminate a very positive recommendation about our services to those who intend to visit Nepal. As the time passed I worked as a part time employee in this company (am still working) as I started my own trekking office in the support and partnership with some friends. Unfortunately, I had to quit and close the office after running 3 years due to some misunderstanding among the partners. Since then I have been working as freelance guide and catering my professional services to tourists from different nooks and crony of the world.
I have led several treks in different regions of Nepal such as the Everest Region, The Langtang Region, The Annapurna Region, The Lower Mustang Region, etc. Thus I can say confidently that I am extremely familiar with these regions. I think that it is imperative for a professional guide to keep knowledge about the history, culture, nature, lifestyle of the inhabitants residing in the trekking regions beside the trekking routes, high passes, altitude sickness etc. I am also acquainted with the general history of Nepal, local flora and fauna, culture and traditions of various ethnic groups of Nepal including environmental issues of the areas popular for trekking.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is always a major concern during high altitude treks. Any negligence may be dangerous to the trekkers suffering from mountain sickness. I am aware with mountain sickness and its symptoms and hence I have been successful in timely rescue of the trekkers suffering from such sickness.
Nepal is famous for different kind of adventurous activities. However around 80% of total tourist who visit Nepal come for trekking. Basically two types of activities are organized, namely 1) Tea House Trek 2) Camping/Tented/Organized Trek. In the tea house trek we accommodate in local tea houses including all meals in local lodges. Unlike tea house trek, in the camping trek we accommodate in tents and the foods are cooked and severed by the Kitchen team. Relatively camping trek is more adventurous and luxurious.
