Gokyo Trekking

Itinerary (4 Days)

Day 01 Phakding to Namchebazar (3,446m.): Approximately 5 hrs. walking which is a beautiful day walking through magnificent Rhododendron, Magnolia and Fir forest. Several villages provide welcome teashops and views of the peaks increase and improve until finally reach Namche after a long pull up of a ridge. Namche is the main Sherpa village and have to rest on the afternoon to enjoy walking round the village.

Day 02 Rest at Namche Bazaar: This is rest day for acclimatization at Namche Bazaar.

Day 03 Namche Bazaar to Phorchethanga: After breakfast the trekking starts for, Gokyo it is one hour walk to cross the plain grass field and reach in Kyanjuma from there  is  two way one is way to Gokyo and another is way to Tyangboche follow the way to Gokyo, from there start to climb up about 2hrs. To reach to Monla danda (3972m.) lunch at Monla Danda. After lunch descend to Phorche approximately 1\30 hrs.

Day 04 Phorchethanga to Dole: You should make this another easy day to aid your acclimatization to the altitude. The trail climbs steeply out of the valley out of the valley through rhododendron forest which give way to fragrant stands of juniper and large conifers as the elevation increases. This portion of the trek is especially beautiful in spring when the rhododendrons are blooming- late April and early May at this elevation. The trail passes through many kharkas, summer settlement used when Sherpas bring herds of yaks to graze in these high pastures. People grazing their herds occupy some of the villages in this valley as late as December.

We tend to oversimplify the many manifestations of the yak into this single word, yet it is only the full blooded, longhaired bull that truly has the mane yak. The female is called a nak. A female crossbreed between a cow and a yak is called a dzum. It's prized for its milk, rich in butterfat, which Sherpas use to make cheese and butter. The male crossbreed, the infertile dzopchuk, is docile and is used to transport loads and as a plough animal. Most of the yaks seen along the trails of Khumbu are in fact dzopchuks. There are numerous other names for crosses between cattle and naks and for second-generation crossbreeds, but the yak, nak dzum and dzopchuk are sufficiently confusing for this lesson in yak husbandry.

The route passes through ahe settlements of Tongba (3950m.) and Gyele 3960m. to Dole where there are two hotels. The views of Khumbila and Tawachee 6542m. Are mendous throughout the day, and it is possible to climb a ridge behind Dole for an even broader view up and down the valley.
