Overview: Royal 4-days Trek
A Short Himalayan Journey with Royal Grace and Cultural Soul
Introduction
The Royal Trek is a short, scenic, and culturally rich trekking route in Nepal that offers travelers an authentic experience of the Annapurna region without the crowds. As the name suggests, the trek earned its royal title after Prince Charles of the United Kingdom, along with a 90-person entourage, famously walked this trail in the 1980s. Unlike high-altitude treks, the Royal Trek is suitable for all fitness levels and offers panoramic views, terraced farmlands, and traditional village life. For those who seek a genuine cultural experience close to Pokhara, the Royal Trek is an ideal introduction to the Himalayas.
Organized by The Himalayan Realms Treks and Expedition Nepal Pvt. Ltd., this four-day journey is perfect for travelers looking for a guided and intimate adventure through mid-hill villages, forests, and majestic landscapes—with the freedom and warmth of a freelance guide-led trip.
About the Royal Trek
The Royal Trek is a relatively easy trek that typically starts from Bijayapur near Pokhara and concludes at Begnas Lake, winding through beautiful Gurung, Brahmin, and other ethnic villages. This moderate trail stays under 2,000 meters, making it a great low-altitude option with no risk of altitude sickness.
The route offers a unique balance of Himalayan views and cultural encounters. Trekkers are rewarded with spectacular sights of Annapurna I, Annapurna II, Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Langtang, and Dhaulagiri ranges. More than just mountains, the trek provides deep cultural immersion into rural lifestyles, traditional homes, and time-honored customs.
Unlike the more commercialized Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp, the Royal Trek is serene and off-the-beaten-path. With fewer tourists, the trail provides a genuine experience of rural Nepal, filled with spontaneous interactions, local hospitality, and peaceful nature.
Location
The Royal Trek is located in the Annapurna foothills, just north of Pokhara, Nepal’s second-largest city and a popular gateway to the Himalayas. The trek usually begins from Bijayapur Khola, about a 30-minute drive from Pokhara, and passes through Kalikasthan, Syaglung, and Chisapani before ending at Begnas Lake.
This region lies in the mid-hills of the Gandaki Province, where lush valleys meet rugged hills and terraced rice fields roll like waves across the slopes. The trek stays between 1,000 and 1,700 meters in elevation, offering relatively easy gradients and stable temperatures throughout the year.
Its proximity to Pokhara also makes it accessible and ideal for those on a tight schedule. Despite its short distance, the Royal Trek is packed with diverse experiences and jaw-dropping vistas.
Lifestyle
The Royal Trek traverses villages inhabited primarily by Gurung, Magar, and Brahmin-Chhetri communities. These groups have distinct customs, dialects, cuisines, and ways of life. The Gurungs, in particular, are known for their hospitality and military service, especially in the British and Indian Gurkha Regiments.
Life here is simple, peaceful, and deeply rooted in agriculture. Farmers grow rice, millet, maize, and vegetables on terraced hillsides, using traditional tools and methods passed down for generations. Livestock such as goats, buffaloes, and chickens are commonly kept.
The houses are typically made of stone and mud, with thatched or tin roofs. The rhythm of life follows the seasons—planting and harvesting cycles dictate daily work, while festivals and rituals punctuate the year with color and celebration. Visitors on the Royal Trek are often welcomed into homes with herbal tea, fresh produce, and smiles.
Religion and Spirituality
The people along the Royal Trek follow a harmonious blend of Hinduism and Buddhism, often practicing elements of both. Small temples, prayer flags, and shrines are found along the trail, demonstrating the region’s spiritual depth.
Hindu deities like Shiva, Vishnu, and Durga are widely worshipped, while Buddhist influences can be seen in mani walls, chortens, and prayer flags, especially in Gurung settlements.
Festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Maghe Sankranti, and Losar (Tamang and Gurung New Year) are major events, filled with rituals, music, and community feasting. Travelers fortunate to visit during these times can witness colorful cultural displays and join in local traditions.
Religious life here is intertwined with the natural world. Locals believe that the mountains, rivers, and forests are sacred—offering protection, prosperity, and peace.
Vegetation
The vegetation along the Royal Trek varies with altitude and exposure. Since the trail lies in the subtropical to temperate zone, it supports a mix of forest types and cultivated land.
In the lower zones, you’ll walk through terraced fields with crops like rice, mustard, and maize. Climbing slightly higher, forests of sal, chestnut, and schima trees dominate, often interspersed with bamboo groves and wild shrubs.
The midsection of the trail is blanketed with dense forests of oak, rhododendron, and pine. Rhododendrons bloom in spring, creating a colorful display that lights up the entire region.
Along the way, trekkers may also see wildflowers, medicinal herbs, and fruit trees such as guava, banana, and citrus. The vegetation not only adds natural beauty but also supports local livelihoods.
Flora and Fauna
Despite being a low-altitude trek, the Royal Trek showcases surprising biodiversity. The mixed forests are home to a wide range of plants, birds, and animals.
Birdwatchers will be thrilled to spot species like the Himalayan bulbul, magpies, woodpeckers, eagles, kingfishers, and drongos. The melodic calls of forest birds provide a tranquil background score during the walk.
Mammals such as langurs, macaques, deer, porcupines, and even civets may be spotted in the forested areas. Though elusive, signs of leopards, wild boars, and jackals are sometimes encountered.
Butterflies, bees, and insects are abundant in the warmer months, especially in areas rich in flowering plants. The entire ecological system here is vibrant and healthy, offering both visual and educational value to trekkers.
Atmosphere
The Royal Trek offers a calm, meditative atmosphere that is hard to find on more commercial routes. The absence of large trekking crowds allows travelers to slow down, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and truly absorb their surroundings.
The mornings are often misty, with sunrays gradually breaking through to reveal gleaming snow-capped peaks. During the day, mild temperatures and soft breezes accompany you along the path. In the evenings, clear skies provide stunning sunset views over the Annapurna range, followed by starlit nights and quiet, restful sleep.
The sounds of flowing water, chirping birds, and distant farm activity accompany the walk. Villages exude warmth and friendliness, where a simple exchange of smiles can bridge language gaps. This intimate, personal atmosphere is what makes the Royal Trek so memorable.
