It takes you from the bustling streets of the capital to the tranquil hills of Nagarkot, offering glimpses into Nepal’s soul — past and present.
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned explorer, this tour delivers a well-rounded cultural and scenic experience close to the Kathmandu Valley’s heart.
About the Tour
This curated 5-day tour begins in Kathmandu, a city teeming with historical monuments, intricate art, and sacred shrines. The valley has been a cultural and spiritual hub for centuries, where Hinduism and Buddhism coexist harmoniously. Visits to iconic landmarks such as Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Patan Durbar Square offer deep insight into Nepal’s religious diversity and architectural grandeur.
The highlight of the tour is a scenic overnight stay in Nagarkot, a hilltop village known for its panoramic sunrise views of the Himalayas, including Mt. Everest on clear days. It’s a perfect contrast to the vibrancy of Kathmandu, offering peace, fresh air, and a slow pace amidst pine forests and terraced fields.
This 5-day itinerary is gentle and accessible, making it suitable for travelers of all ages and fitness levels.
Location
The Kathmandu Valley is located in central Nepal, surrounded by rolling hills and rich in cultural landmarks. It comprises three historic cities: Kathmandu, Patan (Lalitpur), and Bhaktapur. The valley sits at an elevation of around 1,400 meters (4,600 ft), providing a temperate climate and fertile lands.
Nagarkot is a serene hill station about 32 km east of Kathmandu, perched at an altitude of 2,175 meters (7,136 ft). It offers stunning panoramic views of the Himalayas and the surrounding valleys. Easily accessible by road, it’s one of the most popular viewpoints near the capital.
People
The Kathmandu Valley is a melting pot of ethnic groups, primarily inhabited by the Newar community — the original settlers known for their rich traditions, craftsmanship, and festivals. Other ethnicities like Brahmins, Chhetris, Tamangs, and Gurungs also reside in harmony, contributing to the valley’s diverse social fabric.
Nagarkot’s residents are mostly Tamangs and a few Newars, living simple agrarian lives. Hospitality is a key part of their identity, and travelers often appreciate their warmth and humility.
Religious Significance
Religion is deeply embedded in the daily life of the Kathmandu Valley. The area is a spiritual epicenter for both Hinduism and Buddhism, with countless shrines, temples, monasteries, and stupas. Devotees perform morning rituals, light butter lamps, and offer flowers as part of age-old traditions.
Pashupatinath is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and draws thousands of pilgrims annually. Similarly, Boudhanath Stupa is one of the largest spherical stupas in the world, revered by Tibetan Buddhists.
Nagarkot, while not a religious site, provides a tranquil space for meditation, yoga, or simple reflection with the Himalayas in view — a spiritual experience in itself.
Lifestyle and Culture
Daily life in Kathmandu blends ancient traditions with modern lifestyles. In the old quarters, you’ll find women in traditional attire selling fresh produce, craftsmen carving wooden windows, and bustling markets. Festivals such as Indra Jatra, Dashain, Tihar, and Buddha Jayanti are celebrated with grandeur, color, and deep-rooted rituals.
Nagarkot offers a slower pace. Locals engage in farming, run small guesthouses, or work in tourism-related activities. Life revolves around community, nature, and simplicity.
Visitors are often enchanted by the balance of the old and new, where technology coexists with temple bells and prayer flags.
Flora and Fauna
The Kathmandu Valley and Nagarkot are surprisingly rich in biodiversity despite their proximity to urban development.
In the valley’s forested areas, you’ll find trees like Sal, pine, oak, and rhododendron, particularly in areas like Shivapuri and Phulchowki hills. These forests are home to various bird species such as the Himalayan bulbul, magpie, eagles, and owls. Small mammals like the mongoose, monkey, and civet cat can also be spotted occasionally.
Nagarkot’s surrounding areas offer sightings of rare butterflies and birds, especially during the early morning hours. During spring, the hills bloom with rhododendrons, Nepal’s national flower.
Vegetation
The vegetation in Kathmandu and Nagarkot ranges from subtropical to temperate. In the valley, lush gardens, paddy fields, and flowering plants are common. Locals cultivate rice, maize, mustard, and vegetables using traditional farming techniques.
Nagarkot’s hills are cloaked in forests of pine, alder, and oak, which keep the air fresh and cool. Terrace farming is practiced along the slopes, where potatoes, millet, and seasonal vegetables grow.
This diverse vegetation not only supports agriculture but also enhances the scenic beauty of the region.
Atmosphere and Climate
Kathmandu Valley experiences a moderate climate throughout the year. Summers (May–August) are warm and humid, while winters (December–February) are cool and dry. Spring (March–April) and autumn (September–November) are the best times to visit due to clear skies and comfortable temperatures.
Nagarkot offers a cooler climate due to its elevation. The air is crisp, the skies are often clearer, and temperatures are milder—making it an ideal spot for sunrise and sunset photography. On clear mornings, the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, and even Mount Everest are visible in the distance.
Both locations offer a refreshing atmosphere perfect for those escaping city stress or seeking a mindful, peaceful travel experience.

Dammaru Niraula was our guide and confidant for our recent visit to Nepal. We went on a humanitarian visit to build a hothouse in the village of Phortse in the Khumbu region of Nepal but also included some trekking on a personal level before and after our project. Dammaru was a vital link in getting the project off the ground and then…
Dammaru Niraula Trekking Guide Trip Leader I have had an association with Dammaru over the last three years. My first trek with Dammaru was to the Solu Khumbu region where he tailored a trek to suit our request to climb some remote passes and stay off the main tourist routes where possible. His knowledge of the area was very impressive and his attention to our safety was always his major concern. The second trek I did with Dammaru two years…
Dear Dammaru I have been trekking to Ghorepani poon hill on Jan 07 for 6 days with Mr. Dammaru. Poonhill is so beautiful, so all I can do is just taking pictures on poon hill. If you were planning to trek in Nepal, I…
I was a member of a group of nine friends from Northamptonshire in 204 from the UK, on a trek of the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. Apart from one member, we were all approaching or over the age of 60 and were all well aware of the difficulties we could encounter at Thorong La which sits at an altitude of 5,416 meters (17,769…

My husband and I embarked on a trip to Nepal in October 2006. We were hoping to avoid the large tour groups and were referred to Himalayan Holidays based in Kathmandu as a provider of customized tours. We had looked on the net to determine the tour we wanted to undertake and spoke to many people and eventually decided 6-day on Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. We live in a plain and therefore training for the trek was a challenge in itself. We spent our weekends climbing up and down a 700metre high hill that was regarded as sufficiently steep for our training needs. However, we were unsure of what to expect in Nepal and were concerned about our levels of fitness for the trek that we had in mind. We were introduced to our guide, Dammaru at the hotel we were staying in Kathmandu and our anxieties were quickly alleviated. This diminutive gentleman exuded confidence and assured us that he was able to accommodate our individual fitness levels and ensure that our time in his country was hassle free. And indeed he did! Without it being particularly noticeable, Dammaru controlled the tempo of our daily treks in order that the enjoyment factor always exceeded any physical discomfort. His relationship with the locals was both real & genuine which meant we never felt like intruders or uncomfortable in their presence. Dammaru's keen negotiation skills with the local tea house proprietors' meant the delay between arriving & unwinding from the challenges of our daily treks was minimal with the accommodation always being appropriate to our needs. His professionalism was faultless. He provided us with a wealth of information on all aspects of the history, culture, flora, and fauna of this remarkable country. Not only was he a fantastic guide, but his cheeky grin and sense of humor ensured Dammaru to be a fantastic traveling companion. Our dealings with Dammaru exceeded all expectations and we hope to make a return visit to this stunningly beautiful country.
