Sunkoshi River Rafting is one of the ten best white water rafting trips in the world. Big rapids, warm water beautiful scenery and most camping make this a classic multi-day river trip. Sunkoshi River Rafting is Great trip for intermediate and advanced kayakers in Nepal. At its best in medium to high flows.
The river rises near the Tibet and is joined by the Bhote Koshi just downstream from Barabise.
The sun koshi flows eastwards in Nepal through the great valley between the Mahabharat Lekh Mountains and the Himalaya. It form the watershed for most of eastern Nepal and gathering strength from tributaries draining. The highest mountains in the world it emerges onto the northern plains of India where it joins the Ganges.
The volume increases considerably with the flow from these tributaries. In November, the flow at Dolalghat is about 100 cfs., which is approx. 11,00 cfs.; lower down the river, through the big rapids of the ‘Jungle corridor’ it would be about 400 cubes which is approx. 11,000 cfs- a typical low flow on the Grand canyon of the Colorado. At the lake –out at Chatara , the flow is a mighty 800 cfs.-still only a fraction of monsoon levels.
Most raft groups at present start at Dolalhat, and from here the first few days are relatively easy and are a relaxed warm –up for the rapids below. Most major rapids are pool/drop with huge bouncy pressure waves near the bottom-similar to the rapids of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado. Days of running big rapids and floating through lush green countryside make this a truly memorable river experience.
River flows vary immensely – from the huge post-monsoon run-off in late September down to low winter flows in January and February, rising again in May with snow melt and per-monsoon rains. With the right group and experience it is possible to raft in high water conditions post –monsoon in September or in May. At this time the river the river is high and wild and certainly not for the faint-heated.

In clear weather you will have a magnificent view of the Himalayan Ranges. Upon arrival at Dolalghat we unload the gear – lunch will be served and a full safety briefing will be given by your expedition leader. The first and second days are easy paddling. The big one you will encounter today is a class 4+ rapid “Rotten Cave”. We will choose our beach campsite, where dinner will be served amidst the splendor of the star-filled sky.
Day 02: Have breakfast pack up the gear and start rolling down the river. Today you will encounter a big class 4+rapid “Meat grinder”. It is fairly straight run down the center avoiding holes left and right. A few meters below here the Tamba Kosi River joins the Sun Kosi on the left with a beach on the confluence. There is another beautiful Shiva temple overlooking the two rivers. We camp here.
Day 03: Today a few kms below the confluence of the Likhu Khola is a short, class 3+ rapid ‘Pre-Anxiety’ soon followed by a long class 4 rapid ‘High Anxiety’ with a large hole on the left halfway down and a series of holes at the bottom. Float a while and then camp.
Day 04: This day starts with several class 3+ rapids then a quick stop for buying food and maybe beer. Then prepare for a big and interesting one ‘Harkapur 2 and 3 the hardest rapid on the river which should be carefully scouted. Camp.
Day 05: Some kms below Harkapur, Dudh Kosi River joins the Sun Kosi from the left. Below here the river widens into an arid area of gravel. You meet some small rapids and will teach you into another aptly named rapid ‘Jaws’. Camp.
Day 06: Today is a hard day as you will be encounter most of the grade 4+ rapids – you are straight into good exciting rapid “Rhino Rock” which is a grade 4+ followed by “Jungle Corridor” a kilometer of continuous white water. Waterfalls cascade on both sides of the river. One waterfall makes a great spot for a team shower. Camp.
Day 07: Last few days are mainly wave trains if you are interested you can try kayaking where our experts will teach you the basic skills needed to maneuver the boats or learn the Eskimo roll. Camp.
Day 08: The last stretch of river which brings you to the last class 4+ ‘Big Dipper’ is a series of huge standing waves. A few kilometer later Big Arun and Tamur rivers joins together to form the Sapta Kosi. Then you float along on the powerful current, the hills dramatically give way to totally flat Terai and the northern plains of India. This is the end of a classic and memorable river journey. We will finish our trip around 2 pm pack the gear and then drive back to Kathmandu around 4 pm from Chattra. This takes around 13/14 hours.

Dammaru Niraula was our guide and confidant for our recent visit to Nepal. We went on a humanitarian visit to build a hothouse in the village of Phortse in the Khumbu region of Nepal but also included some trekking on a personal level before and after our project. Dammaru was a vital link in getting the project off the ground and then…
Dammaru Niraula Trekking Guide Trip Leader I have had an association with Dammaru over the last three years. My first trek with Dammaru was to the Solu Khumbu region where he tailored a trek to suit our request to climb some remote passes and stay off the main tourist routes where possible. His knowledge of the area was very impressive and his attention to our safety was always his major concern. The second trek I did with Dammaru two years…
Dear Dammaru I have been trekking to Ghorepani poon hill on Jan 07 for 6 days with Mr. Dammaru. Poonhill is so beautiful, so all I can do is just taking pictures on poon hill. If you were planning to trek in Nepal, I…
I was a member of a group of nine friends from Northamptonshire in 204 from the UK, on a trek of the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal. Apart from one member, we were all approaching or over the age of 60 and were all well aware of the difficulties we could encounter at Thorong La which sits at an altitude of 5,416 meters (17,769…

My husband and I embarked on a trip to Nepal in October 2006. We were hoping to avoid the large tour groups and were referred to Himalayan Holidays based in Kathmandu as a provider of customized tours. We had looked on the net to determine the tour we wanted to undertake and spoke to many people and eventually decided 6-day on Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. We live in a plain and therefore training for the trek was a challenge in itself. We spent our weekends climbing up and down a 700metre high hill that was regarded as sufficiently steep for our training needs. However, we were unsure of what to expect in Nepal and were concerned about our levels of fitness for the trek that we had in mind. We were introduced to our guide, Dammaru at the hotel we were staying in Kathmandu and our anxieties were quickly alleviated. This diminutive gentleman exuded confidence and assured us that he was able to accommodate our individual fitness levels and ensure that our time in his country was hassle free. And indeed he did! Without it being particularly noticeable, Dammaru controlled the tempo of our daily treks in order that the enjoyment factor always exceeded any physical discomfort. His relationship with the locals was both real & genuine which meant we never felt like intruders or uncomfortable in their presence. Dammaru's keen negotiation skills with the local tea house proprietors' meant the delay between arriving & unwinding from the challenges of our daily treks was minimal with the accommodation always being appropriate to our needs. His professionalism was faultless. He provided us with a wealth of information on all aspects of the history, culture, flora, and fauna of this remarkable country. Not only was he a fantastic guide, but his cheeky grin and sense of humor ensured Dammaru to be a fantastic traveling companion. Our dealings with Dammaru exceeded all expectations and we hope to make a return visit to this stunningly beautiful country.
